Professional Interests

Emanuel Boutzoukas is a second-year doctoral student at the University of Florida (UF) in the Department of Clinical and Health Psychology, under the mentorship of Dr. Adam Woods.  He graduated from Florida State University (FSU) in 2016 where he received Honors Distinction in Psychology, with minors in Biology and Computer Science. Emanuel’s research focuses on counteracting cognitive declines in aging using non-invasive brain stimulation paired with cognitive training. He aims to use multimodal neuroimaging and neuropsychological testing to characterize mechanisms of cognitive improvement in older adults. As of Fall 2019, Emanuel accepted a position on the Breathing Research and Therapeutics (BREATHE) NIH T32 Predoctoral Fellowship, where he is gaining “cross-training” in respiratory neuromuscular systems and interventions targeting neuroplasticity across several clinical disorders. Currently, Emanuel coordinates a phase II clinical trial, the Enhancing Cognition in Older Adults with Intermittent Hypoxia and Cognitive Training (EXCITE) Study, which pairs cognitive training with intermittent hypoxia in older adults to target neuroplasticity.
