Professional Interests

Nicole D. Evangelista is a second-year doctoral student in the Department of Clinical and Health Psychology under the mentorship of Dr. Adam Woods. She graduated from the University of California San Diego (UCSD) in 2014 with a B.S. in Physiology & Neuroscience, and a minor in Psychology. As an undergraduate at UCSD, she was a research assistant for Dr. Mark Bondi and Dr. Lisa Delano-Wood, evaluating cognitive and brain changes in middle-aged and older adults who were at a higher risk for dementia. After graduation, she worked as a lab manager/research assistant at the VA San Diego Healthcare System for Dr. Delano-Wood, where she utilized fMRI and neuropsychological assessments to examine cognitive and clinical outcomes in veterans with history of traumatic brain injury. She also worked for Dr. Katherine Bangen, examining cerebrovascular markers of cognitive decline in older adults with risk of developing dementia. In the Woods lab, she is currently involved in the objective current flow study that examines the effects of in-scanner tDCS on behavioral and functional outcomes (fMRI) and performs in-vivo current flow measurements in tDCS recipients using MREIT. Her first-year project utilized multimodal neuroimaging measures to investigate the contributions of brain function and structure to working memory in healthy older adults. She aims to follow up on this project by employing machine learning methods to determine the best predictive model of working memory performance, using multimodal measures of whole-brain structure and function. Nicole’s future projects will continue to incorporate her interests in utilizing multi-modal imaging and other translational research methods to better characterize inter-individual physiological differences underlying age-associated cognitive impairments that could potentially serve as targets for intervention strategies.
